7. le mont Arafat, the Mount of Récognition, situated twelve miles from Mecca, so called because Adam and Eve, after 200 years of séparation on earth, met there.

9. la sainte Caaba, or Kabah, the cubelike building in the center of the mosque at Mecca, which contains the black stone (Hajaru'l- Aswald), an irregular oval about seven inches in diameter and the object of a spécial worship on the part of Mohammedans. According to tradition this black stone came from Paradise and at the time of its descent was whiter than milk, but the sins of the children of Adam hâve caused it to become black, at their touch. Another legend is that the black stone was originally the angel who guarded the forbidden tree in Paradise and was charged to warn Adam if he should approach it; but having neglected his trust, he was changed into a jewel, and the day of judgment he shall résume his pristine form and return to the holy angels.
