INTRODUCTION XXI

VIL BIBLIOGRAPHICAI NOIES.

The standard text of Racine and that used in this édition, is that of Paul Mesnard in les Grands écrivains de la France (Paris, 1865). A supplementary volume by Marty-Laveaux contains a Lexique de la langue de Racine with a grammatical introduction, which has been consulted forthe présent édition. The best French annotated édition of Andromaque is by Lanson (Hachette). There are others by Larroumet, Boully, Lavigne, Abbé Figuière and Bernardin. There is an excellent édition with German notes by Stem, and another by Van Laun. I know of no commendable édition in English.

The best popular biographies of Racine are by Larroumet, in the séries of Grands écrivains français^ and by Monceaux in Classiques populaires, One may consult also with profit Stapfer's Racine et V. Hugo, Deltour, les Ennemis de Racine and Sainte-Beuve *s Port-Royal f volume 6). On Racine 's dramatic art the most valuable essays are probably those by Brunetière in his Époques du théâtre français, in the second volume ofhis Histoire et littérature and in his Manuel de la littérature française, Brilliant essays by Lemattre may be found in the first, second and fourth volumes of his Impressions de théâtre. Attention may be called also to a study by Taine in his NoU' veux essais, to Lanson's Histoire de la littérature française and to Faguet's Dix-septième siècle. The list might be indefinitely extended with little trouble and probably less profit.
