OPINIONS OF THE PKESS

H English stndents of French literatnre are indebted to Messrs. Hachette and Oa. for the publication in their séries of Modem French Authors, of sélections fret* the prose and poetical works of Alfred de Musset. Alfred de Musset is known M) one of the most brilliant writers of the présent century, and in Oie sélections made for this volume the editors bave inclnded some of bis cleverest works, and hâte afforded tbe strident an opportunity of comparing his différent styles as a dramatist, novettst, and poet. " On ne Saurait Penser a Tout," and " Il faut Qu'une Porte soit Ouverte ou Fermée," are two of the authort most charming proverbial comédies, and Alfred de Musset never wrote anything more beautiful thsn the two novelettes, "Croisllles" and "Pierre et Camille." The latter is a perfect story on •

French model, and la Instructive as well as interesting, as Qlustrating the change whicfc has taken place sinee the time of the Abbé De l'Epée In the treatment of deaf mates. The sélection is a welcome and valuable addition to the séries. The Leeds Mercury.

"Mr. Masson, in his Sélections .from Alfred de Musset, has made some Judicioua extracts from the works of one of the most élégant lyric poets and vigorous dnunatista that modem French literature can boast." Scotsman.

'• It is generally believed that Alfred de Musset* s works, admirable as they are, must, on acconnt of their oharacter, be scrupulously exclnded from the schoolroom. we hâve» been toldthat it wonld be impossible to make from them a sélection both ample and varied enough to give a satisfactory idea of the writer. Yonng persons must, it is sala, feelieve, on the authority of more experienced readers, that the poet who charmed us by •* L'Espoir en Dieu" was one of the greatest représentatives of eontemporary French literature. M. Gustave Masson has endeavoured to show the fallacy of this statement by publishing a volume in which will be found choice spécimens of Alfred de Musset's composition in every style."
