Thb study of modem languages has, during the last few years, entered upon a new stage of development in English Schools, and been thoroughly revolutionised by the progress of modem science. The naturel conséquence of this movement was at once to snpersede the time-honoured grammars of Hamel, Lévizac, Wanostrocht, &c. ; even Noël and Chapsal had to relinquiah their claims, and a gênerai demand flprang up for new educational works, in connection with the teaching, more particularly, of French. It is for the propose of meeting this desideratum that Messrs. Hachette hare issued the séries of works, the liflt of whioh is appended, and which, taking the pupils irom the nursery, lead them gradually on till they are qualified to compete fm Scholarships and Exhibitions at the Universities.
