In choosing this first name (cf. that of Tiodoro Bianchi, page 86, line 18) Mérimée was probably thinking of le roi Théodore, Baron Theodor von Neuhof (1690-1756), a German adventurer proclaimed king of Corsica (1736), but later expelled, or of Tiodoro Poli (1797-1827), a famous Corsican “ bandit-king.”
