C. Thème
1. Alphonse took off his diamond ring, ran to the statue and placed the ring on its finger. 2. Then he ran to the house, washed his face and hands, and put on his new coat again.
3. Five minutes afterwards they were on the road for Puygarrig.
4. They were going to set out for the town hall when Alphonse said to Mérimée, in a very low tone, “ I have forgotten the ring! ”
5. “It doesn’t matter,” said Mérimée, “you have another ring.” 6. At four o’clock, when the lunch was over, the men went walking in the park, or looked at the country-women dancing. 7. In that way they spent some hours. 8. “It is nearly eight o’clock,” said Peyrehorade; “we must prepare to leave for Ille.” 9. Mérimée had a bad headache at Ille, and the supper disgusted him a little, xo. Alphonse said to him, “When we get up from the table, let me talk to you.” 11. Then he said, “I do not know what is the matter with me; I cannot get the ring off the finger of the statue.”
