Les Oiseaux. (Page 21.)
Antoine Vincent Arnault ( 1 766-1 8 3 4), dramatist and fabulist, had a brilliant career during the Revolution and the Empire, though he was obliged to emigrate during the Terreur. He enjoyed the intimate friendship of Napoleon, whom he had accompanied to Egypt, and who from Sainte-Hélène bequeathed 100,000 francs to him, and he occupied during Napoleon's reign various responsible posts. As secrétaire general de P Université, it was he who, on the recommendation of Lucien Bonaparte, obtained for Béranger his modest appointment as commis expéditeur. Arnault was banished on January 16, 18 16, and expelled from the Académie. It was on the eve of his departure that he wrote the lines : —
De ta feuille détachée,
Pauvre feuille desséchée,
Où vas-tu ? — Je n'en sais rien.
L'orage a brisé le chêne
Qui seul était mon soutien.
D'Aquilon la froide haleine
Depuis ce jour me promène
De la montagne à la plaine,
De la forêt au vallon.
Je vais où le vent me mène
Sans me plaindre ou m'effrayer.
Je vais où va toute chose,
Où va la feuille de rose
Et la feuille du laurier :
of which Sainte-Beuve has said : ' Arnault avait rencontré ce jour-là une de ces feuilles qui surnagent, un parfum qui devait à jamais s'attacher à son nom.'
His republican tragedies, Marius à Minturnes (1791), Lucrèce
(1792), Les Vénitiens (1799), Germanicus (performed in 1817), are now deservedly forgotten, but many of his short satirical fables and epigrams, like Le Hanneton, have survived him.
Béranger was devoted to him, and a constant guest at his house.
Lu. Du palais et de la cabane. A delicate allusion to both sides of Arnault's poetic talent ; if his tragedies were known only to the educated rich, his fables had reached the very humblest.
