^^ Nîmes, a most illustrions old city in Languedoc, was Mr. Daudet's birthplace.

■^^ Tarascon : a town on the Rhône between Avignon and Arles. The place has been smartly satirized in Daudet's Tartarin de Tarascon, whose further adventures are narrated in the book Tartafin sur les Alpes. The mère name of Tarascon, for that matter, suggests the burlesque.

In mythological history the l'arasque was an amphibious nionster vvhich slew the inhabitants from afar, by casting its excréments against them. But they invoked the protection of Martha of Bethany, who, according to a tradition which the Church has sanctioned, had corne to their land; and by her the Tarasqiie was slain. Its image is soleninly carried about in processions at Tarascon and elsewhere.
