Extract of letter from R. Philipps to Board of Trade DATBD May 25^*^ 1827. ^
The State and circumstances of the ffrench Inhabitants is
what next calls on your Lordships to consider of proper
^ methods to engage their AUegeence and fidelity or to gett rid of
them ; till then the Brittish Governm^ canot be said to be esta-
blished there and as down-right fforce canot be proper to effect
/ the one, nor the Goverum^ in a condition to enforce the other, it
is my hunable opinion that two Barracks be erected at the Head
/ of the Bay, the one at Minas for 2 companys, the other at
* Ghignecto for fifty Soldiers so scittuated as to countenance the
' setUing of naturall born Subjects near to those ffrench (who in
, time may teach them their duty) & also to be a check to theire
behayior and theire Traffick & Correspondence with the neig-
bouring ffrench Colonys, which they now carry on at pleasure
& is the chief means of theire disafection and impudent con-
tempt of & Indépendance on the Government, it is proposed
that those Barracks be things of little Expense only Ditchd
about & picketed.

EXTBACT OF A LETTER FROM ArMSTRONG TO BoARD OF TrADE.
Dec^ 2°d 1726. 1
And whether your Lordshipps wîU not thînk it proper for me to take a Tour thro' the province, and oblige the Pfrench Inhabitants as well as Indians, to take the Oaths to his Majesty Eling George, in order to become true and lawfall Subjects, or be obliged to Quitt the Government intirely, which in my humble opinion would be the best way, for we never shall be safe or secure so long as they are permitted to be Snakes in our Bosoms ; that would cutt our Throats on ail occasions.
Endorsed : Letter from Colonel Armstrong, Lieut. Gov^ of Nova Scotia, inclosing copies of sev* Papers. Dated at Canço the 2^^ of Dec^ 1726.
