LE COURRIER DU CANADA
We have often thought that the aspirant for forensic honours had great difficulties to overcome at his outset, for want of some assistance to direct his inquiries, instead of plodding through a mass of indi-
gested learning, to be found in the. multiplicity of
books, and by a severe and tedious process to extract the theory of Law, or else, by an assiduous attendance on the Court, to pick up theory and practice together. We therefore cordially welcome the above work, by Professor Bibaud, the first volume of which is now complete, and we think the earned Commentator is entitled to and will receive, the thanks of the profession for this valuable addition to our elementary works on Law. Itis the first compressed treatise in the law of Lower Canada that has been published, and is remarkably clear, concise and comprehensive, —an evidence of the industry, learning and ability of the author. The student will have the means of acquiring a competent knowledge of the Law and its principles. Professor Bibaud is evidently well versed in the Rornan Civil Law, that noble and rich treasure of jurisprudence which is the foundation of almost the whole of our common law, and impressed with a high sense of the dignity and importance of that noble and honorable profession, and being so, inculcates upon the student the necessity of an accurate and complete knowledge of Roman History and Antiquities as a necessary preliminary to the study ofthe Law. The learned author, lucidly and ably, traces every law and rule to the principles, and leads, as it were, the student to the origin, reason and history of each. What is a lawyer witout a knowledge of the principles of Law ?.. a mere “ Rabula”’ a quack. Law is a science, than which
none is more vast, more complicated, or more necessary, 2nd as such the present work wil! exhibit it to the reader. This volume treats of the following subjects.
History of the Roman Law.
Analytieul Sketch of the Institutés of Justinian.
General Principles of Public and Private Law.
Obligations and Contracts.—Treaties or contracts bétween Nations.—We highly approve of it, and recom'end it to the professional student for a studious and attentive perusal.
