TRADUCTION EN FRANÇAIS

Nothing in the world was more beautiful than Mont Saint-Michel Abbey in the setting sun. Everything was red—the horizon, the sea— but the abbey, when we saw it first, was a black fairy castle standing up against a purple sky. We remained in ecstasy as if we had discovered a dream palace, lifting our eyes on this huge jewel, as great and heavy as a mountain and as delicate and light as a piece of lace. Such a habitation truly was worthy of an archangel, even of Saint- Michel. But the good saint reigned only over the moving sands, more treacherous than the sea, while Satan inhabited the coast where he bad beautiful rich lands and fruitful harvests. One day when the Devil was angry with him, the good Saint invited the Evil One to dinner, “[’1l give you good things to eat,” he said. The Devil ate so much and so well that he became sick. Then the good Saint pursued him through the rooms of his abbey, from stairway to stairway and along the terrace. At last he gave him a good kick in the back and sent him across the sands. The poor Devil got up limping and went away dragging his leg. That is how the peasant related the story of the great struggle between the Saint and the Devil.
