1. 28. six belles ailes. The author has emphasized the wings to connect his story, which is in other respects mei"ely Parisian, with the art of Assyiia. See too Zadig, p. 82, 1. 19, ' quatre belles ailes.'

1. 39. cinq cents millions. This of course must be taken simply to represent an inconceivable number. It is far below the estimated distance of Sirius.

Page 91. 1.20. Monseigneur. The change in tone from the initial ' Qui es-tu ? ' should not be overlooked.

1. 22. A veiller : a repetition of the fancy expressed at tlie opening of Le Monde comme il va.

1. 24. que ne veniez-vous ? Que is the Latin quid iised hère absolutely in the sensé of pourquoi. Darmesteter compares ' Qu' ( = pourquoi) avez-vous à gémir ? ' and ' Que (= à quoi) sert la science sans la vertu ? '

Pas is not used in this construction, and the question is rather exclamatory than interrogative ; see Racine, Les Plaideurs, ' Que n'ai-je des témoins ? ' i. 7 ; and ' Que ne lui laissez-vous finir sa période ? ' iii. 3. The force of the imperfect in veniez-vous should be ob.served.
