1. 16. le secrétaire d'état des affaires étrangères. The Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs at this time was Lord Castlereagh. In 1812, as Foreign Secretary under Lord Liverpool, he became the soul of the coalition against Napoleon, which during the campaigns of 1813-1814 was kept together by him alone. England and Europe owed much to Castlereagh for the forty years' peace that succeeded the fall of Napoleon.

1. 3. Philoctète. Philoctetes, a famous archer, who was friend and armour-bearer to Hercules. The latter left him his bow and poisoned arrows, and according to one story he accidentally wounded his foot with one of these arrows.
