THE MERCIER MONUMENT
Upon this granité column stands, The Premier of his day ; So long as the French language lasts, His memory won't decay.
The Allégorie Panes :
Front :
Hère Eloquence expands his wing, Abundance makes him smile; She with her horn of plenty, Cheers the f armer 's heart meanwhile.
Back:
Hère Patriotism stands alone, Contentment on her face; Our country's flag she fondly clasps, Proud emblem of our race.
Right:
A woman gleaning in the field, With sheaf of golden grain ; Personifies the frugal life, Our f armer 's still maintain.
Left:
An angel hère with outspread wing,
In graceful poise, would tell
Of Mercier 's gift of éloquence;
Wich held ail in its spell.
