17.4. ancien modèle : i.e. in the uniform of the vétérans of the Empire.

17.5. porté en bataille : Worn so that two of the corners are to the front and in a Une parallel to the line of the eyes.

17.6. le faubourg Saint-Germain : An aristocratie quarter of Paris on the left bank of the Seine, lying east of the Invalides, and opposite the Tuileries and the Louvre. It is largely composed of quiet streets and self-contained mansions.

Originally a * faubourg ' was a part of a city lying outside the walls [cf. the German ' Vorburg '), but in Paris the word still désignâtes many quarters long since included in the city itself. Each of them has its own characteristics ; a few, like the Faubourg St - Germain, are sélect, while many are typical working-class quarters. Frcquently the word is used without qualification as a synonym for the latter {cf. the use of the adjective ' faubourien,' which means ' plebeian,' ' uncultured'). It is therefore very exceptional to find 'faubourg ' used with the literal meaning of our ' suburbs,' for which the best équivalent is probably ' la banlieue,' and this again seldom has the same associations as ' suburbia ' or ' suburban.'
