balle, a covered market

30. cadenas, a padlock. An Italian word, derived of course from catena.

80. nous n'y pouvons rien, it carit be helped (lit. We canH do anything in it) .

106. ce que c'était que débuter. The relative pronoun what {i.e. that which) must hâve the neutral pronoun ce as antécédent ; and ce is also used again redundantly before être^ when the real subject follows the predicative complément, e.g. 'Ce qui m'afflige c'est la chaleur.' This ce is not used, however, when the complément is an adjective : ' Ce que vous dites est clair.' The real subject of a sentence sometimes follows the complément, e.g. 'C'est un beau pays que la Suisse,' Switzerland is a beautifid country. In such sentences the real subject is generally preceded by que. This will explain ' que débuter ' in the above indirect question.
