PREFACE

The following text contains selected portions of the interesting description of Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign by Thiers, in his monumental work " Histoire de la Révolution française." The simple narrative style of thé author, which is well adapted for early reading, présents few structural or idiomatic difficulties. Hence the notes are confined chiefly to short historical elucidations. No renderings easily found in an ordinary dictionary are given, and only such structural peculiarities explained (with références to Edgren's Compendious French Grammar, last édition, and Whitney's Practical French Grammar) as may be beyond the student but just grounded in the éléments of the language. It has seemed advisable, moreover, to place the notes, thus prepared, where they can be most readily consulted, viz. at the bottom of the page.
