Jj^ADAME THÉRÈSE is the masterpiece of Erckmann- Chatrian, and a masterpiece of French literatm'e. Its clear and simple style, its pnrity of tone, its noble sentiments, its fidelity to history, its absorbing interest, make it especially adapted to young pupils who are reading their first French book.

The aim of the notes is to aid pupils to read the book rapidly, but thoroughly. They are such notes as actual expérience with the book in the class-room has proved to be necessary.

Popular Science. French Prose.

Edited and anDotated by Jules Luquiens, Professer of Modem Languages in Yale Univereity. 12mo. 252 pages. Mailing price, 70 cents; for introduction, 60 cents.

rPHTS volume is not, strictly speaking, a scientific reader ; lis

aim is simply to provide material suitable for imparting the

liabit of careful reading and, in a measure, the vocabulary of

scientific literature. Articles of pure science are valuable, in the

hands of teachers familiar with the technicalities of the subject

treated, but they lay too heavy a burden upon the average in-

structor of modem languages. Thèse sélections hâve therefore

been made from that branch of writing whicli, while drawing

upon facts and scientific data for material, permits the display of

the author's fancy or brightness, and blends instruction with

interest.

A. 0. Gameron, Prof, of French in Yale University : I am using it.

Such use is suffîcient index of appréciation in itself. The scientific sélections are admirable.

It is a bright and sparkling little comedy, and not difficult
