The interview of the Field of the Cloth of Gold between Francis I. of France and Henry Vlll.of England was the occasion of a tremendous display and pageantry which was made much of by the artists and writers of the day and has always been considered one of the picturesque incidents of history. The three great monarchs of Europe were Charles V., recently elected emperor of Germany (1519), and Francis I. and Henry VIII., both of whom had intrigued to win the élection. Charles and Francis had been the most determined rivais, and their hostility continuing after the élection of Charles, both aimed at the friendship of Henry of England, who thus seemed in a position to become the arbiter of Europe and hold the balance of power. To procure this resuit was the aim of Henry*s minister, Wolsey. The meeting at the camp du drap d^or (i 520) was for the purpose of bringing together Francis and Henry. Unfortunately Henry was offended by the other monarch.
