17. cruche, means literally a 'jug' but it is also used, as hère for 'dullard', 'thick headed fellow'.

22. aux Petites-Maisons, 'to the lunatic asylum'. Les Petites- Maisons were at one time a mad house ; it is now a sort of alms house for old couples.
