VI A WORD TO THE TEACHER

method of reading, which the first year's work in this book has rendered very easy to the pupil, obviates the necessity of translating in class and enables pupils to read a larger number of books, and these with much greater ease and pleasure than if they had been required to read in their first year of study, when reading would have meant only the arbitrary putting together of words " picked out " of a dictionary. It is possible for the pupil in third and fourth year work to read in this way, one book a month, such texts as Colomba, Les Misérables y Le Roman d'un Jeune Homme Pauvre, Le Cid, Eugénie Grandet , Pêcheur d'Islande, etc. At the same time, one book such as Graziella, Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme, etc., is chosen for intensive reading in daily work in class, with every idiom studied and analyzed in French, and every grammatical point taken up in the Grammaire de la Conversation, used now in this review as a book of daily reference.
