The article of the decree referred to is : ' It is in no wise lawful for Christians to perform acts of révérence and public worship to an idol under the pretext or with the intention of adoring the cross which is held in the hand or concealed among flowers upon the altar.' The date should be September 12, 1645. The Jesuits were quick to note this error and make the most of it. They also accused Pascal of inventing Caponi ; but, according to M. Molinier {Provinciales, vol. ii. 230), a certain ' Aloysio Capponi, Cardinal-prêtre de Saint-Laurent in Luciua' did exist at this period.

21. Se fléchir = M. F. fléchir, ' as if it was for the rule to bow to the convenience of the subject (person) who owes it obédience.'
