30. The value of the Nile has been well put by Herodotus in his \(TTopîai (II. 5) : Sùpov toi Trorafxov — Egypt is a gift of the river.

31. Thèse détails are not altogether accurate. There was no Egyptian King callecl Myris. The word is formed from Méri, which means lake. Herodotus also mistook the word for the name of a King. Bossuet improves on the error by relating that there were statues of Myris and his wife. The statues actually represent Aménemhat III., Prince of the twelfth dynasty, and his wife. Further, modem calculationshave established that Herodotus had to a large extent exaggerated the dimensions of this réservoir, and there is no évidence to show that it was completed in one reign.

32. The final s is adverbial. Cf. certes, volontiers, etc., and Note 13, Descartes. M. F. uses 'jusque ' in prose. Exception, ' jusques à quand,' for the sake of euphony. 'Jusques,' or 'jusque,' is used in verse according to the requirements of the mètre.

33. That the Greeks imitated Egyptian sculpture is not certain.
