26. Entendus = qui s'y entendaient, 'able.' M. F. ' s'y. entendre ' is somewhat colloquial.

27. Médiocres = M. F. peu nombreuses. Médiocre now means only middling, indiffèrent, or of little ability.

28. Compare with the description of the Persian army. Both descriptions hâve been justly eulrgized. The lalter is a masterpiece of conciseness.

29. ' Rendaient ' would be necessary in M. F. (see Notes, I. 21).
