LA BRUYÈRE
Bruyère might almost be described as ' photographie.' He watches the figures that pass before him on the world's stage, notes every little détail of their persons, their gestures, nervous tics, and, in short, ail the outward manifestations that betray the inward man. In order, probably, to avoid the danger which he did not, however, escape, of making his photographs too personal, he then utilized his material to fashion types of character. The style of the Caractères is summed up by Voltaire in a few words : ' Un style rapide, concis, nerveux, des expressions pittoresques, un usage tout nouveau de la langue, mais qui ne blesse point les règles.' The ' usage tout nouveau ' was the substitution of the ' style coupé ' for the * style périodique,' and the introduction of several words, semi-archaic or technical, which were new to the literary language of his time. There is little to add, except that the mosaic character of the work renders prolonged perusal of it difncult. It is a book admirably adapted for the ' spare moment.'

NOTES
1. ' Habile ' means in this case ■ tactful.' ' Habile ' is often taken by La Bruyère as a substantive, meaning the ablest. Ex. The word is borrowed from Latin habilis, and replaced O.F. able. Cf. English ' able. '
