16. en croire nos yeux. This en with croire cannot well bô translated. It means, lit., 'in respect of it.' Thus, «7 faut Ven croire, 'we must believe him in respect of what he says.' The text means, * we could not believe what our eyes saw.' Croire has the following constructions : (1) croire quelqu'un or quelque chose, 'to believe; * (2) croire à, e.g. croire aux revenants, 'to believe in;' (3) croire en, e.g. je crois en Dieu, ' to believe in.'

24. nous le vendrons un bon prix. Do not put a préposition before the price after acheter, payer, and vendre. Thus, il le vend deux sous, ' he sells it for a penny ' ; j'ai acheté1 ce livre trois francs, * — for three francs'; il l'a payé mille francs, * — forty pounds for it.'
