The study of modem languages has, during the last few years^ entered xipon a new stage of development in English Schools, and been thoroughly revolutionised by the progress of modem science The natural conséquence of this movement was at once te supersede the time-honoured grammars of Hamel, Lévizac, "Wanostrosht, &c. ; even Noël and Chapsal had to relinquish their claims, and a gênerai dcmand sprang up for new educational works, in connection with the teaching, more particularly, of French. It is for the purpose of meeting this desideratum that IMessrs. Hachette hâve issued the séries of works, the list of which is appended, and which, taking the pupils from the nursery, lead them gradually on till they are qualitied to compete for Schoiarships and Exhibitions at the Uniyereitiea.
