OPINIONS OP THE PKESS

" A good school-book. ïhe type is as clear aa the arrangement."

Athenœum, Jan. 6, 1877.

"The Elemcntary French Grammar adapted by Messrs. Brette and Masson for the use of Erplish sohools from M. Auguste Braohet's work is now complète through the publication of the syntax, and we are not astonished to hear that it has met with the most flattering réception. Both parts are foUowed by an alphabetical index which will be found useful for purposes of référence. In aocordanoe with the wishes of many experienced masters, the English translators hâve added a French-English and English- French vocabulary ; beginners will thus be able to do at first without a dictionary, and the serious drawback of a multiplicity of school-bioks \rill be avoided. The rules aro esplained in a remarkably clear and easy manner, ail philological discussions being etrictly avoided. Each section is conipleted and illustrated by a set of questions for eiamination and by exercises of progressive difficulty.''

School Board Chronic.le, March 10, 1877.

" "We hâve no hésitation in stating our opinion that no more useful or practical introduction to the French language has bcon publishcd than this. The historical élément of the work is vory concisely ■nrrought out, and contaiiis a mass of wellgraduated information of the greatest possible utility to those preparing for exami • nation, The author has a happy knack of presenting his détails iu a manner -which at once arrests the attention and keeps up the interest of the studont, yet vnïix a close fidelity to the scientific principles on -which the treatise has been b.-ised."

Public Opinion, March 24, 1877.

" England is fortunate in the services of a small knot of French masters like MM. Masson and Brette, -who hâve, aUke by their tc.^ching and thcir school-books, done muoh for the scientific study of the lang.iage and literature of France. After successfully introducing into English form tlie ' Public School French Grammar,' in -which M. Eittré's researches are happily applied by M. Brachet so as to sho-w the relation of aiodem French to Latin, MM. l'rette and Masson hère translate and adapt the Petite or Elementary French Grammar. That has at once proved as popular as the more elaborate treatise." Edinhurgh Daily Ecview, March 20, 1877.
