Janot

Accounts l'rom Paris inform us of the succoss of a new comic opéra by Lecocq, called Janot, the words of which. are by Meilhac and Kalévy. It is said that the libretto is as amusing as if it were by Scribe. Proba.bly it is really much more amusing than anything that Scribe ever wrote. The scène is laid iu the time of Charles the Tenth. Tho costumes, which are arranged with scrupulous care, atford occasion for quite a novel display. Mdlle. Jeanne Granier plays the hero in a séries of masculine dresses ; and though there are those who find with respect to her that she is a good deal less refined — not to say more vulgar — than when she made her tirât bow to the public of Paris, there is, it seems, in the présent opéra little occasion for anything that is not graceful. Mdrne. Desclauzas, who is really a very witty actress — a stout but piquante matron, essentially Parisian — assista in the performance, |^

The new opéra of the proliric writer Lecocij will not add to his réputation. Janot (the principal personage in Jeannol ànd Colin by Voltaire) becomes rich by being a gymnast, and returns to his former simple ways for love of a pretty modiste. Lecocq has written about twenty pièces, principally of the style of popular songs, with occasional good imitations of the music of 1821, the time of thc action. Some of the pièces are graceful, others full of life, and some simply vulgar. Thc lire and tact of the principal performer, Mlle. Jeanne Gkanikh, wlio played thc masculine rôle of Janot, were thc niîiiti clément s of the présent BUCCess; but for its future, success carmol be predicted with cerLainty.
