Page 62. — i. Turenne. One of the great military leaders of the seventeenth century. He was born at Sedan in 1611, and was killed in an engagement at Salzbach in 1675. He served in the war in Holland under his uncles Maurice and Henry of Nassau. After serving in Lorraine and Flanders, he was named marshal in 1643. His chief services were then rendered, in leading the French forces on the eastern border of France.
