PREFACE
This text will be found suited best to the needs of beginning classes. It is easy French of colloquial character and the story moves rapidly. The Introduction contains some estimates of Theuriet by wellknown French critics, which may serve, if the teacher wishes, to give to the text a certain literary significance. The Vocabulary presupposes some knowledge of irregular verbs. Most of the difficulties of translation are taken care of in the Vocabulary; for such as are not, it is hoped the few notes following the text will prove sufficient.
