éclata, 'revealed itself unmistakably
1. 10. ventre de financier, we should say 'alderman's stomach' or ' corporation. ' Shakespeare ascribes it to the Justice :
"In fair round belly, with good capon lined."
joufflu, 'puffy,' with fat cheeks.
malade, 'unwholesome.'
1. 12. un type. We use the word in the same sense; it must not however be confounded with biblical types or symbols. The idea involved in the word is that everything, for example any animal or plant, is a more or less faithful copy of some perfect form or type existing in the mind of the Creator. Thus the type of a carnivorous animal would be neither a lion, nor a tiger, nor a cat, but some ideal animal to which all have some resemblance. Such 'types' played an important part in scientific classification in de Vigny's time.
