1. 13. de l'impression de ses paroles, 'about the effect of his words.'
1. 16. concordat, the treaty between the Pope and Bonaparte, as First Consul, July 15, 1801, making the Roman Catholic Church, though under certain restrictions, once more the established Church of France. It was a thoroughly retrograde step, perfect religious equality having been for some time established. According to Lanfrey, everyone of importance, except a few partisans of the ancien regime, was opposed to it. Professor Seeley says of it, " In reality he crushed the Gallican church, which had been created by the Constitution Civile (1791), and which had perhaps begun to take root, and restored the Papal Church, shorn of its endowments, and dependent, so long as he lived, on the state." There are three other Concordats in French History, 1513, 1813 and 1817.
1. 17. un air de martyr, not Pair d'un martyr, E.B. 10. Notice le martyr, martyr, distinguished, from le martyre, martyrdom.
1. 22. prodigieux, 'monstrous,' 'abnormal.' On the construction see E. B. 129.
exigences, 'claims,' 'pretensions.' The same sense is found in our adjective 'exacting.'
