1. 32. Montecuculi (1608 — 1680), a famous Austrian general, of Italian parentage, opposed to Turenne in the latter part of the Thirty Years' War, and again in the campaigns of 1672 — 75. In 1654 he was employed on a diplomatic mission to Cromwell; in 1664 he gained the famous victory of St Gotthard (not the Swiss pass) over the Turks.
Turenne (161 1 — 1675), perhaps the greatest French general before Napoleon. His campaigns in the last four years of the Thirty Years' War are very famous. In the wars of the Fronde, he and Condé were pitted against each other, with varying success. In 1660 he was made Marshal-general of the armies of France, and commanded in Louis XIV.'s campaigns in Flanders and on the Rhine. The great blot on his fame is the devastation of the Palatinate. When Turenne died, eight marshals of France were appointed, among them Luxemburg and Schomberg. They were contemptuously called la monnaie de M. de Turenne, the 'change' for Turenne.
1. 37. les Rois du Midi. In 1806, Collingwood, as Commander-inchief in the Mediterranean, received a piteous appeal from the King of Naples, whose continental dominions were occupied by Joseph Bonaparte.
1. 39. dans les mers de l'Inde. Nelson, as is well known, went to the West Indies in pursuit of the French fleet under Villeneuve just before Trafalgar, but Collingwood remained near home.
