LE PARTAGE DE LA TERRE
Page 16. In The Sharing of the Earth Schiller depicts the poet as having nothing, yet possessing everything.
"Zeus called aloud to men, * Take ye this earth and share it among yourselves.' Thereon one seized the rich cornland, one the forests and the hunting-ground ; the king grasped the tolls and taxes. Ail was divided ère the poet came. ' Alas,' he cried, 'O Father ! is naught left for thy most loving son?' * Where wert thou, dreamer, when ail was being shared?' said Zeus. 'I was with thee,' the poet answered — *I lost Earth in contemplating Heaven.' ' Henceforth soar heavenward whene'er thou wilt,' was Zeus' reply."
