LA PRIÈRE DE MARGUERITE
Page 19. The prayer of Marguerite is from Goethe's Faust. Hawthorne says in his Blithcdale Romance:
"I hâve always envied the Catholics their faith in that sweet, sacred Virgin 'Mother, who stands between them and the Deity, intercepting somewhat of his awful splendor, but permitting his love to stream upon the worshiper more intelligibly to human compréhension through the médium of a woman's tenderness."
I. Abaisse, ô mère de douleurs! un regard de pitié sur ma peine!: Cast, O Mother of Sorrows, a look of pity on niy grief!
" Stoop thy maternai brow, And mark with pitying eye my misery."
— Swanwick's Translation.
