Page 45. The Noble Wife of Azan-Aga first appeared in Herder's collection of ballads vvhich he gathered from almost every European language, and published under the title of Volkslieder. It was supposed to be a translation from the Morlachian. Goethe was unfamiliar with the Slavic language and had to divine the import of the poem.
