PREFACE

"La Frontière", by Jules Claretie, appeared for the first time in the Bévue des Deux Mondes, 1894, but bas been subsequently publisbed, as part of the "Collection Guillaume", by E. Dentu, in Paris.

The présent édition is based on the latter publication, except that the préface of the author bas been omitted and a few misprints bave been corrected.

The author bas kindly given me the permission of publishing an annotated édition for the use of American schools and collèges.

I bave endeavored to make the édition as senriceable as possible, and hope that my expérience of many years as professor of modem languages in the State University of lowa, and, later, as professor of romance languages in Yanderbilt
