A servant happened to come along at that time, with a sieve in one hand and an earthen dish full of whiting in the other. took oflf her father's overcoat, which she gave to the servant to brush, at the same time telling him to run for the doctor.
The doctor came on his bay mare, carrying his case of instruments and his lance. He found the old gentleman very ill, and he was almost afraid that he was too late in coming ; but he said that he would bleed him freely, provided that no one would accuse him of killing him if he died.
The daughter, although'she was much alarmed, told the doctor that he must try to save her father's life at any price, The opération was performed and proved successful, and although the old man had a great deal of pain, he was quite better in a few days.
