Page 85. 1. 10. Le maréchal de Monttuç (1502-1577) is chiefly remembered for his victories over the Huguenots, notably at Var in 1562. He earned the name of the Butcher of the Royalists from his fiendish cruelties to the defenceless Protestants. He wrote a book of memoirs called Commentaires, in which he gloats over his own barbarity.
