notables were meetings of important personages of France, called together by the Crown to give a semblance of popular authority to royal absolutism. Here particular référencé is made to the assembly called by Louis XVI. for the 22nd Feb. 1787, and again for Nov. 6th, 1788, the actions of which precipitated the Révolution.
