« London, Aug:u8t i5*^ 1876.
» Being the aulhor of a little pamphlet [Faîhalla des Sciences. Paris, 1875) published in honour of my ilJustrious countryman DENIS PAPIN, bofD at Blois (France) on the 10!^ of august Â. D. 1646, 1 beg respect-

fully permission to make an objection to an english printed label used in your so highly interesting colteclion, label affixed to Papin's cylinder (n* aoiQ— d.).
» In section Xn, close to tbe vénérable looking Puffing Billy and to the celebrated Stephenson's Rocket (utilising the tubular boiler of our Frenchman Séguin) is exhibited one of Papin's cylinders, of lai^ size.
» Tbal most interesting object is lent by the Muséum ofCassel,towhich it was most generously given by the firm Henschel and S.
» A painted inscription, in german, describes this iron cylinder as having been cast at Veckerhagen.
> Now, the large card label affixed to the object runs thus :
"Papin's cylinder. German^ 1699"
» This conveys the most erroneous idea that Papin (French bom and bred) was a German. It would seem better to write :
Invention : French; Workmanship : German ;
or, at least, to suppress the word : german ; especially so, when the neighbouring english machinery is not labelled with the word : english.
» May I be allowed to close the présent letter, with a référence to my philosophical wiews regarding the four geometrical bodies, whose accurate models hâve been sent in by Max Dell, of Carlsruhe (Poinsofs star Pofyhedroy sect. II, i44) ; thèse bodies are complemenlary to the five platonic regular polyhedra, and with the sphœra, form the primordial group of géométrie regularity.
9 I take this philosophical whole, to be the /m^basisof décimal numération !
» Ten is then an absolute and primordial number, given to mankind by cternal Geometry : and the geometrical group is divided into 5 simple, 4 composite and i (circuler) body, just as the arithmetical group (9 6gures and the cipher) isseparaled into 5 prime numbers, 4 composite and I (circular) cipher.
I hâve, etc., etc.
