11. c'était un esprit. 'He,"she,'or 'they,'subjectof the verb

'to be,' must be trauslated in French by ce before a noun, il

before an adjective or a noun used adjectively. Cf. :

C'est un soldat (noun),\,TT • „oldipr ' Il est soldat [v^à].), / ile is a soirtier.

28. lui enseigna. Two classes of verbs govern a dative of the person and an accusative of the thing, viz. : (a) Verbs of saying, asking, permitting, etc. ; (h) Verbs of teaching and giving. But it must be remembered that, while an intinitive after a verb of the tirst group is preceded by de, an infînitive after a verb of the second group is preceded by à. Ex. : Dites-hd de venir, ' Tell him to corne,' but Apprenez-lui à écrire, 'Teach him to Write.' Donnez-leur quelque chose k faire, ' Give them something to do.'
