Scène IV
67 20 — Pour me mettre à la gêne : To torture me. Gêne
is found in Old French spelt gesne, gehine, géhenne, and cornes from the Latin gehema (derived from the Hebrew), a valley by Jérusalem where children were burnt as an offering to Moloch. Mettre à la gêne, same as mettre à la question, to torture. Gêne now signifies inconvenience, trouble, involved circumstances.
