PREFACE

A FEW years ago the publishers of this book issued an abridged édition of Erckmann-Chatrian's " Waterloo *' which met with such a favorable réception that a demand was created for a similar édition of "Le Conscrit de 1813," to which the former work is really a sequel. In response to this demand, the présent édition has been prepared. Long and less important épisodes hâve been omitted, but the thread of the story has been preserved, and is hère given entirely in the words of the original édition.

In order to adapt the work more fully to the wants of beginners, a complète vocabulary has been added.
