The advantages daimed for this method are :
(tf) Tûe lessons are mostly based on object-teaching, thus assodating perception directly with the foreign expressions.
{i) Nearly ail the lessons are inshape of conversation, in order to oontinually drill the stndent's ear and tongue.
(c) The most nsef ni being always taught first, the stndent's miud is not overburdened with mies and words.
{d) Where rules are to be given, they are îllustrated by striking ex« amples.
(e) The prononciation of ail new words is caiefuUy transcribed and the idioms and other difficulties are thoroughly explained, so that, if necessary, the students can progress without a teacher.
The method is designed :
(i) For self-instruction : the student in sach case reads each lesson •everal times aloud and then asks himself the quêtons of the book, answering them.
(2) For reciprocal instruction in dubs or parties of f riends, each mtm« ber altemately taking the rôle of teacher, asking the questions and let ting the other members answer. This is more advantageous than self -instruction, as the ear is drilled in catching the foreign sounds fay hearing other people's voices.
(3) For schools in which a course in conversation b desired^ besklei the ordinary course in grammar and translation.
(4) For schools that hâve large classes or cannot give a great deal of time to languages ; as in this book the students find ail difficulties ex- ^ained. thus being enaUed to do a great deal of work outside of theil »^tatk>ii8
