Bastille, the famous prison fortress in which so many
victims of despotism of the old Régime had been incarcerated was destroyed by a popular uprising July 14, 1789. Pierre François Palloy, (1754-1835) who called himself and was called “Je patriote Palloy” was an architect and contractor when the Revolution broke out. He was one of those who stormed the Bastille. Afterwards he was officially chosen to tear down the walls of the old fortress and with the stone he carved busts or
statues of the revolutionary heroes as well as reproductions of the Bastille.
