During the French Révolution the peasants of La Vendée, led by their priests and nobles, arose against the Republic. It was necessary to send republican armies into this section to quell thèse royalist uprisings. It was with one of thèse armies that Joseph Bara went into La Vendée, where he died gloriously in 1793.
