By ALBERT A. MÉRAS, Ph. D., Assistant Professer of French, Teachers Collège, Columbia University, and B. MÊRAS, Director of Stem's School of Languages, New York.
TOGETHER, thèse books provide a complète grammar and reading course for a first year study of
French. While they are intended for a year' s work in high schools, they can be completed within a half year in a beginner's course in collège.
^ The books are based on the direct method of teachîng but they are conservative rather than radical for they do not omit translation from English into French. In both books the aim is to create for the classroom a truly French atmosphère, and to provide French that is natural, practical and interesting. Both volumes are illustrated witt very attractive drawings.
^ In Le Premier Livre ail the work in reading, grammar, conversation and composition is based on the successive chapters of a single story, — Sans Famille, At the beginning of each of the 60 lessons the most important words are made the object of spécial study. Each chapter of the story may be employed as the basis of extended conversation. Complète French-English and English-French vocabularies are included.
51 The basis for ail the work in Le Second Livre is Jules Verne' s Le Tour du Monde en Quatre- Fingt Jours. This story b especially well adapted to keep up the interest of the pupils and to fumish a large amount of material upon which conversational exercises and the study of grammar can be based. Pardcular attendon is paid to the study of the most important irregular verbs^ the principles goveming
of pronouns and the study of idiomt»
