16. Saint-Amxind. There is a French playwright of this name (1797-1885), a prolific writer of comédies and vaudevilles. But the sentiment of the verse quoted is more characteristic of Saint- Amant, 1594-1660, a French poet of the second order who fiourished during the âge of Cardinal Richelieu. founded French Academy (1635), was fond of good cheer and addicted to bibulous inspiration. 152. 19. Petit-vin (very often=tnn inférieur, vin de seconde cuvée, vin fait avec le maro — skins — du raisin à sa sortie du pressoir) . But the above is not the sensé of the expression m the passage. In France the term petit-vin is also eztensively applied to-a light-colored wine grown in the north-east and central parts, as opposed to the gros vin of the south, which is thicker and darker, almost black. Hère in the text the petit-vin referred to is the characteristic wine of Bar-le-Duc, of which there are two kinds, one light red and the other, called vin gris de Bar-le-Due, slightly pink — sometimes straw-colored (cf. pelure d'oignon, p. 170, 1. 12). The latter is highly esteemed.

20. Ce petit lait, whey. The term îs used playfullyto emphasize the assumed innocent qualities of the petit-vin mentioned above. For as a matter of fact the latter is qui te capiteux (heady, intoxicating, cf. p. 13, 1. 16); but as it is singularly free from the sliarp harsh taste of alcohol to warn one of its strength— it is ail the more treacherous (cf. exp. "ce traître vin pelure d'oignon," p. 170, 1. 12). On account of its smoothness to the taste it has given rise to current sayings in the neighborhood of Bar-le-Duc, as, ce petit vin se hait comme du lait, il est mx>elr leux comme un velours, etc.
